Pop music theory 1.0

I've got a theory and I need to test it out.

My theory is that the defining song of any decade will be released in its second year, i.e. the one ending in the number 1. However, I'm struggling to think of how this may be proved for the last decade, the name of which is a too hot a potato for me to tackle whilst I'm busy theorising.

Here's what I've got so far:

1980s defining song: The Specials - Ghost Town
1990s defining song: Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
2000s defining song: ?
2010s defining song: Rebecca Black - Friday

Any fellow music scientists able to help me develop this? No time-wasters.

  1. Could it be "Can't get you out of my head" by Kylie Minogue?

    Some other songs I liked released that year;
    The Hives "Hate to say I told you so"
    Feeder "Buck Rogers"
    Destiny's Child "Survivor"
    Mogwai "My Father, My King"
    The Strokes "Last Nite"
    Wheatus "Teenage Dirtbag"
    S-Club 7 "Don't Stop Movin"

    Not sure any of those could be considered a decade defining release though.

I like to get comments, me. Do not be offended if I do not reply to them. The way I see it is, I have already said what I have to say and this is now your turn. So, there you go. Get saying things.
